Why convert photos to black and white in your browser?

Black and white photography removes color distractions and puts the focus on light, texture and emotion. With Asset Compressor you can convert dozens of photos or whole albums to monochrome in one pass, and see the effect in the live preview before you commit.

All processing happens on your device. Your personal photos are never uploaded to a server or stored in the cloud.

Black & White or Film Noir?

The Black & White preset removes all color and keeps the tonal range of the original, which suits portraits, landscapes and documents. Film Noir converts to monochrome and then adds contrast and slightly darkens the picture for a dramatic, high-contrast look.

You can combine either preset with the Brightness, Contrast and Saturation sliders. Filters and sliders sit side by side, so you can change both and watch the preview update. Hold the compare button above the preview to see the photo without the filter.

Convert, crop and compress in one step

The filter is applied together with everything else in the settings: crop shape, maximum width and height, output format, quality or a target file size such as 100 KB. A typical use is turning a folder of color photos into square black and white WebP files of 1200 px, ready for a website.

Re-encoded images do not keep EXIF metadata such as camera model or GPS position.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting to black and white reduce image quality?

The filter itself keeps your resolution. The converted image is encoded again, so with JPEG or WebP the quality slider decides how much detail is kept. Choose PNG for a lossless result.

Can I convert an entire folder of photos to black and white at once?

Yes. Drop the folder and every supported image is converted. The ZIP download keeps your subfolder structure.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. All conversions happen in your browser on your own computer or phone.

How do I get more contrast in my black and white photo?

Choose the Film Noir preset, or raise the Contrast slider. Both are applied in the live preview, so you can see the result before you click Apply.
