When should you increase photo contrast?
Flat lighting, hazy weather and scanned documents often leave images looking washed out. Raising contrast separates light from dark areas, adds depth and makes colors look stronger.
Push too far and bright areas lose detail or shadows turn solid black, so check the preview while you move the slider and use the compare button to see the original.
The Punchy preset and the sliders
Punchy increases contrast to 140% and brightness to 105%, which deepens shadows and keeps highlights bright. For a gentler boost, leave the preset on Original and raise only the Contrast slider by 10–20%. Saturation makes colors stronger or weaker without changing the light and dark balance.
The filters and the fine-tune sliders are shown side by side, so you can switch presets and adjust the sliders without scrolling between them.
Scans, screenshots and product photos
Contrast helps with faded scans of documents and old prints, and with product photos taken in dull light. Combine it with a crop to frame the item, a maximum width for web use and WebP output for smaller files, all in a single pass for a whole folder.
Frequently asked questions
Does increasing contrast wash out bright areas?
Strong contrast can clip very bright and very dark areas, which loses detail there. Use the live preview and the compare button to find a level that still looks natural, and lower the Brightness slider if highlights get too bright.
Can I combine contrast boosting with image compression?
Yes. You can increase contrast, crop, convert to another format such as WebP, and compress to a target file size in a single pass.
Which is better: the Punchy preset or the Contrast slider?
Punchy raises contrast and brightness together for a quick result. The Contrast slider changes only contrast, which gives you more control.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The adjustment runs in your browser, so your photos stay on your device.
